French Migraineurs Under-diagnosed and Under-treated
For this study, French researchers interviewed 10,532 people and found a migraine prevalence of 21.3%. They collected information on the patients’ expectations when consulting their doctor. Most patients (76%) wanted to obtain effective treatment, and 68% wanted to know more about migraine triggers and causes of attacks (60%). Only 31% wanted to find out more information about the disorder, its consequences and seriousness (28%), and how to live with migraine (24%).
The researchers found that the patients who returned for follow-up were more satisfied with their outcome compared to those who had discontinued care. When migraine was diagnosed during the first consultation, and acute treatment or preventive treatment was prescribed, patients were more likely to return for follow-up compared to those who did not receive a migraine-specific diagnosis or treatment.
The researchers conclude that migraine medical diagnosis and follow-up remain low in France, and that the quality of the first consultation determines follow-up and use of recommended migraine medication.
With regard to treatment, another study assessed treatment satisfaction in 1710 migraineurs in France. Satisfaction with treatment was assessed for the following criteria: quick relief of headaches; pain free response; relief of associated symptoms; and ability to carry on present activity.
Patients were treated for 6 migraine attacks with specific (triptans and ergot drugs) and non-specific (analgesics, non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) medication. At the start of the survey, more than 50% of patients treated their attacks with non-specific medications and satisfaction with treatment was 30%. At the end of the survey, more than 75% of patients were using migraine-specific medication and satisfaction with treatment was 83%.
The researchers say the study shows that satisfaction with treatment is improved from 30 to 80% when migraine-specific medication (mainly triptans) is used.
