Life and Migraine - Documentary about Life with Chronic Migraine
This lack of awareness and understanding about chronic headache are what prompted neurologist Dr. Edmund Messina, Director of the Michigan Headache Treatment Network, and Daniel Messina, to make this film. The filmmakers simply wanted to let real people share their pain so their fellow sufferers find the help they need. The film ends with the message of hope: chronic headaches can be managed, with professional care, understanding, and patience.
The film, which is about 27 minutes in length, is sensitive, informative, and inspirational. The 13 "stars" simply relate their experiences of discrimination at work due to headaches, family pressures and disappointments, misunderstandings, frustrations dealing with doctors, and the relief of finding someone who can help. In addition to the real-life interviews, Life and Migraine tells the fictional but very vivid story of a woman who struggles to cope with her headaches at work and home. It brings to life the extent of her pain and suffering, and the lack of understanding and awareness so prevalent in our society.
The film is currently available only in English and the information is based on U.S. data, however the subject matter should be applicable to a wide range of audiences. Translated versions of the film may be available in the future.
The American Headache Society and the National Headache Foundation endorse Life and Migraine. It was an Official Selection at the Kansas International Film Festival, in the documentary competition division, in September 2005.
